A Guide To Checking Your Tyres | Understanding Tyre Safety
Recent research conducted by leading industry body TyreSafe shows that a frightening one-in-five drivers have NEVER checked the tread on their tyres, a number which rises to one-in-three among younger drivers.
However, performing regular checks – looking at tread depth, general condition, and tyre pressure – can reduce the risks of an accident and help drivers reduce fuel consumption and running costs.
UK law specifies that tyre tread should be a minimum of 1.6mm and drivers can easily check this in a minute with a 20p coin:
Insert a 20p coin into the grooves of your tread. If the outer band of the 20p coin is below the line of the tread, then your tread is greater than the 1.6mm minimum but If the outer band of the coin is visible, you should get your tyres checked immediately.

Wagonex Founder and CEO, Toby Kernon decided to back this year’s TyreSafe campaign to ensure the convenience of vehicle subscription does not lead customers to overlook regular checks.
He said: “One of the great advantages of vehicle subscription is that maintenance and replacement parts and tyres are cover by the monthly fee.
“Our customers love the fact that if anything ever goes wrong with their car, then it will just be sorted and they never have to worry about any unexpected costs or hassle.
“However, this convenience and peace of mind does not eliminate the need for regular safety checks.”
Kernon added: “Tyres are the one and only bit of a vehicle that makes contact with the ground and making sure they’re properly looked after is crucial for safety and performance”
Stuart Jackson, Chair of TyreSafe, said: “TyreSafe has contributed to the reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads by more than 50%.
“But still over 1,000 people are killed or seriously injured every year as the result of poorly maintained and defective tyres. And that number is grossly underestimated when you consider the number of people affected, like family members and friends.
“Just one incident like this is too many and so we are delighted that companies like Wagonex are stepping up and carrying the message to their customers.”
