If you want to drive one of the safest cars currently available anywhere, drive the Volvo XC90.
And that’s official.
The European New Car Assessment Programme, mostly known as Euro NCAP, is a car safety organisation. They test every new car for its level of safety both to passengers and to pedestrians. And when they put the Volvo XC90 through its paces, they reckoned they’d never tested a car that was so safe. At the time, the XC90 included safety devices that NCAP hadn’t got around to measuring.
Every XC90 has automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection. Energy-absorbing front seats help prevent spinal injuries. There is rear-end collision protection which senses if you are going to get shunted and makes the seat belts pull occupants back to help avoid whiplash. There’s automatic emergency braking at junctions which applies the brakes to stop or help prevent an accident if you inadvertently turn into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The list of incredibly clever safety wizardry is endless.
The other big advantage of the Volvo XC90 is that it’s great to drive and great to live with. The XC90 is a 4-cylinder 2.0 litre diesel hybrid 235bhp model with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive.
Don’t be fooled by the size of the XC90; it’s lively with 0-60 coming up in around 7.5 seconds. Top speed, where allowed, is 112mph. And yes, it’s fun to punt around. Keen drivers will enjoy pushing on, although the XC90 is at its happiest on a long distance cruise.
And don’t forget, the Volvo XC90 is a full 7-seater. Family transportation doesn’t get any better. Neither does taking a load of friends to the theatre or for dinner. Interior build quality is stunning.
As for the level of specification, we shan’t bother giving you a full list. Needless to say that all of the essentials like sat nav, air con, powered tailgate, rear camera, leather upholstery etc come as standard.
It’s easy to see why the XC90 stacks up as both a personal and company car. If you need a luxurious, 7-seat SUV that is comfortable, economical, extremely well equipped and good to drive, the Volvo XC90 is a safe bet.
